What Is a Survivor Pool?

The easiest football game to learn. The hardest to win.

A survivor pool is an NFL contest with one rule that matters: every week, pick one team to win its game. Win and you move on. Lose and you are out. And here is the twist that turns it into a strategy game: you can never pick the same team twice all season.

That is the whole game. No point spreads, no rosters, no scoring categories. Which is exactly why a survivor pool is the one football contest your entire group chat, your office, and your family will actually play together.

One game, five names

You will hear the same game called all of these. If someone invites you to any of them, the rules on this page apply.

How a survivor pool works

1

Someone starts a pool and invites the group

A commissioner creates the pool, sets the mulligan rule (extra lives, usually zero or one), and shares an invite.

2

Everyone picks one team each week

Just a winner, not a spread. Picks stay hidden from the rest of the pool until the games kick off, so nobody can copy.

3

Winners advance, losers are out

If your team wins, you survive to next week and that team is off your board for the rest of the season. If your team loses, your season is over.

4

Last one standing takes the crown

The pool runs until one survivor remains, or until Week 18 ends and everyone still alive shares the title.

Why survivor pools are so fun

One decision a week

No draft, no roster, no waiver wire, no Tuesday maintenance. Survivor asks for exactly one decision a week, which is why people who find fantasy football exhausting love it.

Everyone can play

Your cousin who watches one game a year has a real shot against your friend who studies film. Favorites lose every single NFL week, and one loss treats everyone the same.

The tension compounds

Week 1 feels easy. By Week 8 your best teams are used up, half the pool is dead, and a Thursday night coin flip decides your season. No other football game builds pressure like this.

It lives in the group chat

Survivor is a social game. The trash talk after a big favorite loses and takes out a third of the pool is the actual product. The picks are just the fuel.
